It’s safe to say that ChatGPT has dominated conversations in 2023, so much so that it’s hard to believe that the OpenAI-created chatbot is only celebrating its 1st anniversary.
A demo version of ChatGPT was released on November 30th, 2022 and (per Forbes) was quickly adopted by one million users eager to discover what the chatbot could do. One year later, Open AI CEO Sam Altman has claimed that the service is reaching 100 million active users each week. This staggering statistic that is only matched by the creators claiming that over 80% of Fortune 500 companies have added ChatGPT into their workflow.
The detail in which ChatGPT can answer users’ questions is one of the reasons for its popularity. The impressive technology has only been improved and refined over the past twelve months, with the chatbot now able to connect to the internet in real-time, having previously been restricted to using data taken before September 2021. Version 4.0 of ChatGPT launched in November, now allowing users to input images as well as text to produce images from simple prompts on demand.
In the twelve months since it launched, ChatGPT has been the subject of many a debate over safety and the validity of the information it presents. However, it is also fair to say that without it — and without it being so accessible — public interest in artificial intelligence would not be so high.
It will be interesting to see how ChatGPT and the conversatios surrounding AI will develop in the future. For now it’s clear that, one year from launch, ChatGPT and creators OpenAI have already made history.
